Cinema, not content: the new visual language of premium

Why we hire directors of photography instead of social media managers, and what that means for the experience inside the network.

The first decision we made when building Privé's visual production standards was to hire directors of photography rather than social media managers. The distinction sounds semantic. It is not. A social media manager optimizes for distribution — format, timing, hashtag strategy, algorithmic favor.

A director of photography optimizes for the image itself — light quality, compositional depth, tonal coherence, the relationship between subject and space. These are different skills, different sensibilities, and different outputs. The result on Privé is content that does not look like content. It looks like cinema.

Hero images are shot on medium format with prime lenses. Lighting setups take hours, not minutes. Post-processing follows a house color grade rather than filter presets. The difference is visible in a single glance and felt over hours of browsing.

Members report that spending time inside Privé feels like reading a premium print publication rather than scrolling a social feed. That experience is not accidental. It is the direct consequence of treating the visual language of the platform as a primary product rather than a distribution channel.
